Times of India News article - "Retail chains adopt prepaid cards to retain customers"

The Times of India carried an article recently ( March 5th)- which was carried in all their editions in India. In the print edition and on the online versions. This was specifically in the business section and featured the category of Gift cards that we have been principally pioneering in India. The journalists did speak with me and business heads of other brands - to get our perspective on this growing category and on the potential for the future...

BANGALORE: Prepaid cards have become the latest retail tool to keep consumers hooked to brands. They offer convenience and safety, because customers don't have to carry cash, and they often come with a variety of offers , including discounts.

Brands like Cafe Coffee Day, Pizza Hut, Provogue, Kaya, Fastrack , Gili and a host of others have launched prepaid cards. A prepaid card works like a debit card with a PIN number that can be redeemed at the brands' outlets. The cards in India are based on the closed loop model - that is, they can be redeemed only at the brand's stores. "When I have money loaded on the card, the tendency to come to the same place is higher," says K Ramakrishnan, marketing president at Cafe Coffee Day. The brand's card Cafe Moments , launched this month, offers a 5% bonus on cards with a value of Rs 100 to Rs 499, 7% on Rs 500 to Rs 999 and 10% on Rs 1,000 and above.

Global Prepaid Exchange recently estimated that the size of the organized prepaid gift card and gift voucher market in India is Rs 2,000 crore and would grow to Rs 8,000 crore by 2015. "The acceptance of gift cards in proportion to vouchers has increased significantly," says Pratap T P, chief marketing officer at QwikCilver Solutions , a provider of prepaid card solutions.

A prepaid card obviates the need to pay cash every time, and it also enables faster accumulation of bonus points or other offers . Prepaid cards in India are currently being used more as gift cards. Some brands have used it to launch a promotion or a service. What the prepaid gift card did for Kaya was to generate incremental walk-ins ," says Suvodeep Das, marketing head at Kaya Skin Clinic. In Kaya prepaid cards, currency can be reloaded in multiples of Rs 500 to up to Rs 2 lakh. Kaya sells about 250-300 gift cards a month.
However, Devangshu Dutta, CEO of retail consultancy Third Eyesight, says growth in prepaid cards would be restricted by the fact that they can be used only at a particular brand's outlets. "Also, a customer cannot claim the minimum residual value in the card. He will have to top it up to redeem it," he says.

Giftbig Holi Celebrations

Moved into a new office recently - all happy to have moved into a bigger place. From the small basement floor occupation that we had in the past.
Koramangala has a nice bustle & vitality to it- and we wanted to remain in the same vicinity of the old office.
The new office is in the midst of a variety of colors of all kinds - what with the Jyoti Nivas Girls College a few metres away!
And gastronomic treats of Punjabi, Lebanese, Hyderabadi, Udupi, Andhra, Malabari, Mediterranean cuisines all just a few walks away.

And work does get done in the midst of these minor distractions too.
Holi was the first significant festival that came up..ofcourse apart from a Valentine's Day and Women's Day.

An impromptu celebration was witnessed- bringing with it a mood of joy, happiness, colors and fervour.

When God Descended at Home in Bangalore...

Feb 25th -2012, Bangalore. The Gods descended on Stage in a School Bangalore !

My 9 year old son, Chinmay had his Annual Day at his School, New Horizon-Gurukul.
He was playing the role of Lord Krishna in the "Krishna-Leela" part of Mahabharata.
His mother and grandmother decked him up in the Krishna Attire at Home before he went to school.

Some pictures taken in candid camera setting to savour the divine moments provided by my son for posterity.

Chinmay at "Krishna Leela" Stage Play on School Annual Day

Chinmay had the Annual Day of his school, National Horizon-Gurukul, Bangalore on Saturday, Feb 25th, 2012.
The Annual Day depicted scenes from Mahabharatha - with students from each class performing different scenes.
Chinmay's Class 4 performed Krishna Leela - with Chinmay as Krishna.
He has been excited about this Annual Day performance over the last many weeks - and the school and teachers did manage to excite him and all the students about the rich culture and stories that are part of this great Indian epic.

The Grand Finale had students of the school performing together - numbering over 800! It was an enchantinge xperience for the audience to witness the children chanting mantras from the Geeta - for about 8-10 minutes.
Students were placed across the entire school - corridors, on the stage, behind the audience, alongside the aisles.
This created a fantastic & mesmerising effect for the audience ....

Dads of Girls

Am father of a 14 month old girl. Having been the father of a boy until now, baby girls did not need to be planned for handling. They seemed like belonging to another planet. Until she came into my life.

Found this beautiful blogpost by another Dad of another girl. Who puts it very well indeed.
